Assistant conservator

Susan joined MAC in September 2026 as Assistant Conservator. She holds an MA in Conservation of Art and Cultural Heritage, with a specialization in paintings, and an MS in Conservation Science and Imaging from SUNY Buffalo State University, along with a BA in Material Culture Preservation from the University of Delaware and a BS in Art History from Portland State University. Susan gained experience at institutions including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the private studio Art Conservation Northwest, treating a wide range of modern and contemporary paintings as well as historic works. At the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, she contributed technical research and published entries to the museum's French Paintings and Pastels catalog while carrying out treatments, condition assessments, and loan examinations. Susan brings strong technical imaging, documentation, and treatment skills to the position at MAC, with particular enthusiasm for the material and ethical complexities of modern and contemporary paintings.
